The Laureate of the 21st Khwarizmi International Award (February 2008)

The project of IHPCRC, titled "Design and Implementation of Cluster Supercomputer", was selected as the Second Laureate Applied Research of the 21st Khwarizmi International Award. Moreover, it was honored the first award of ISESCO (Islamic, Educational and Cultural Organisation).

The knowledge acquisition in design and implementation of supercomputers is a crucial achievement which plays a key role in development of strategic technical and scientific products. In the other word, many high-tech research areas have great affinity to powerful computational engines such as supercomputers with which one can overcome the difficulties of modeling, implementation, simulation, validation, and verification of complicated scientific problems.

With 15 years of research and experience in devising/developing different cluster computers, the HPCRC center of AUT is pleased to announce its successful achievements in different dimensions of supercomputer buildings including: System Architecture, Workload Management, Single System Image, Parallel I/O, High Availability, System Security, Operating System, Hardware Management, and Parallel Programming Tools. The number of publications in prominent scientific journals and well-known conferences clearly illustrate the volume and importance of works during this period.

It is worth mentioning that the award is for three successful projects related to cluster computing: “AUTCluster System with 32 Processors”, “A Parallel Processing System for IMAPP Software”, “A Cluster Supercomputer for IRIMO”. As such, the latest product, a cluster system was built based on an order from IRIMO to provide the required computational power for fast, accurate and reliable weather forecasting. This system is built around 216 computing cores which produce a total power of 860 GFLOPS, introducing a giant processing engine to the challenging scientific frontlines. At the time being, the IRIMO’s monster is the most powerful supercomputer ever been in Iran and ever built in the Middle East.
